Responsible AI Image Editing: A Practical Checklist
Build trust by disclosing material edits, respecting consent and preserving originals.
Consent comes first
A technically possible edit is not automatically appropriate. Obtain permission when changing a recognizable person, especially for advertising, political messaging or sensitive contexts. Avoid creating scenes that imply actions or endorsements that never occurred.
Children, private individuals and intimate imagery require stronger safeguards. When consent is unclear, do not publish the edit.
Disclose meaningful changes
Cropping and color correction rarely change the meaning of an image. Adding or removing people, altering an event or generating documentary-looking content can. Label material synthetic or manipulated content in a way the audience can understand.
Keep an audit trail containing the original, the final version and the main transformation steps. This helps teams review mistakes and answer questions later.
Protect evidence
Never overwrite an original that may have legal, journalistic, medical or operational value. Store it separately with reliable metadata and access controls. AI enhancement should be treated as an interpretation, not as proof of hidden detail.
Try an idea and review your result before saving your edits.
